How this ranking works
Accounts are sorted by the interest a $10,000 balance would earn in a year at the posted rate for that balance tier, minus any monthly fee. Registered accounts (TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, RRIF) and accounts limited to a group are left out. Rates are the posted rates institutions submit to FCAC; promotional and bonus rates may not appear.
Rebates for bundles or credit cards, welcome bonuses, app quality and customer service. Those matter, but they can’t be checked from published fee data — so they don’t move the order.
Frequently asked questions
Why might a bank’s website show a higher rate?
Many banks advertise promotional or bonus rates for new money or a limited time. FCAC’s tool lists the posted rate the institution submitted. We show that rate and date it; check the bank for current promotions.
Is savings interest taxable?
Yes, interest in a non-registered account is taxable income in the year it’s earned. Holding savings in a TFSA keeps the interest tax-free.
